Clearly, they WERE smarter than a 5th grader — or at least all the other trivia teams at the Trivia Ninjas Trivia Night Challenge Wednesday night at Zaffiro’s Pizzeria and Bar at the Marcus Parkwood 17 complex in Waite Park.

The team “We Are NOT Smarter Than a 5th Grader” triumphed with some big point questions, including a Maurice Sendak Trivia Hog in Round 3 didn’t hurt.

But what’s amazing is our winner’s progress throughout the evening.

After they got only three of the questions right in Round 1, “5th Grader” was tied for 11th place. But two 167 pointers and a near hog at 250 points in Round 2 propelled them to 5th. And after a perfect Round 3 — including a hogger on Question 1 — “5th Grader” never looked back.

Here’s how everyone did at game’s end:

1. 2,798 — We Are NOT Smarter Than a 5th Grader
2. 2,600 — Flatologists
3. 2,459 — The B Sharps
4. 2,399 — Browncoats
5. 2,352 — Jolly Jokers
6. 2,123 — A Metaphor Is a Simile with Attitude
7. 2,006 — Show Me your Haboobs!
8. 1,937 — Sad Face 🙁
9. 1,789 — Toonces
10, 1,749 — Angry Lunchables
11. 1,143 — Adrift Rudderless in a Sea of Trivial Possibilities
12. 1,031 — Cellar Dweller formerly known as Sting Ray
13. 576 — Korbels
14. 38 — No Pain No Gain

THE TALE OF THE TAPE

TRIVIA HOGS (500 pointers)

Round 3, Question 1 (Book banning)
Only one team knew Maurice Sendak’s Mickey the toddler ran around less-than-clothed in the book “In the Night Kitchen.” Congrats, “We are NOT Smarter than a 5th Grader!”

Round 4, Question 1 (The Internet)
That silent-but-deadly team “Flatologists” summoned all their energies and blew-out the competition by knowing about Google’s amazing Chromecast TV watching fob doo-hickey thing-a-ma-bobber. Good job, flatulators!

NEAR HOGS (250 pointers)

Round 1, Question 4 (General trivia)
What does it mean that only “Browncoats” and “Adrift Rudderless in a Sea of Trivial Possibilities” knew that the “G” in G-string stands for “groin”? That bit of buttfloss was worth 250 points for each of those teams.

Round 2, Question 2 (Trivia in the Making)
That Kerry Washington is so stylish. And “A Metaphor Is a Simile with Attitude” and “We Are NOT Smarter Than a 5th Grader” both knew that People Magazine named her “Best Dressed Woman” for 2013.

SKUNKS (No pointers)

None. Zero. Nada.

SUPER NINJA SECOND CHANCE CHALLENGE

Proudly sponsored by St. Cloud Overhead Door Company.

Every week, we give one of the non-first place teams a chance to win a $25 Zaffiro’s/Marcus Theatres gift card by answering a three-part question correctly.

5th Graders — this week’s winning team — drewToonces for the Super Ninjas.

Their question:

The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences each year honors excellence in television with The Emmy Awards. We’re going to ask you about last weekend’s Emmy Awards show.

First, who hosted this year’s Emmys last Sunday night?

Second, who paid tribute to comedian Jonathan Winters, who died in the past year?

Third, who sang the Beatles’ classic “Yesterday” with the blessings of co-writer Paul McCartney?

“Toonces” had their three answers well before time was called. Maybe they should have spent a little more time on the third answer. They incorrectly guessed “Jimmy Fallon.”

The correct answers:

1. Neil Patrick Harris
2. Robin Williams
3. Carrie Underwood

FINALLY…

We’re absolutely giddy with excitement, counting down the hours to our first Monday Trivia Night at Zaffiro’s. It happens starting next Monday. The format will be the same as Wednesday Trivia Night shows, but the questions will be different for each contest we host. So if you and your team would like to play both nights, you’re more than welcome to.

We’re totally aware of WHY we’re expanding — it’s because of your support of the Trivia Ninjas over the last six months. We appreciate that and thank you!

If you’re just checking us out and you’d like to play some pub trivia Ninja-style, just grab some friends and stop by either Monday or Wednesday nights. It’s free to play.

If you have any questions or concerns,  CONTACT US and let us know. We love hearing from you.

Our next show is Monday night, September 30th, 2013 at 6:30 p.m.

Until then, see you at the movies.
